Meowingtons Hax Tour - The Palladium

Published in Music Events

(This post is from our old website so images may be missing.)

August 27th might have been the best night of music I have experienced in my lifetime. Deadmau5 was on my list of top three artists I must see before I die. Having already seen my favorite progressive rock band Genesis play live, that only leaves Daft Punk on my list. I haven't even reached 20 years old and I'm pretty damn close to achieving my goal. Anyways, you probably just want to hear about the night so here it goes.

Deadmau5 Mini-Mix by our friend DJ Richadrez (check out his soundcloud for more mixes by him.)

The Meowingtons Hax Tour, named after Joel Zimmerman's (the man underneath the mau5head) pet cat Meowingtons who is often featured on Zimmerman's Youtube channel as well as his Ustream videos, has been going on since early August and will be passing through 20 cities across the US and Canada up until November. If you have a chance to get a ticket, don't pass on it, you will not regret seeing deadmau5 perform.

This stage of the tour saw deadmau5 passing through the Hollywood Palladium that we have previously mentioned in our recent club post. I've been to the Palladium once before to see Dada Life and Steve Aoki perform. The opener for the night was Zedd, a 22 year old electrohouse producer from Germany. You may have heard Zedd's latest single Dovregrubben, a play off of the Norwegian classical orchestral piece In The Hall of The Mountain King by Edvard Grieg. Though I only caught the second half of his set, Zedd did a great job getting the crowd excited before by mixing some newer electro house bangers with some classics like Daft Punk.

After Zedd left the stage, DJ Aero and Tommy Lee came on. This part of the night was a complete joke. I'm not sure why anyone would hire Tommy Lee to DJ for them. Maybe it was a sympathy hire because he is dating Sofia Toufa (SOFI in Sofi Needs a Ladder) and they wanted her to have some company on the tour. Or maybe he was hired for his “celebrity” from his days drumming with Motley Crue. The mixes were mostly generic fade-out/fade-ins, it was very boring and the crowd was not very into it. Whatever it was, Tommy Lee and DJ Aero at the very least acted as a contrast to make deadmau5 seem that much better than they were.

I forgot to mention this entire time, Zedd, Tommy Lee and DJ Aero had been mixing near the edge of the stage in front of a giant sheet. Once Tommy Lee and DJ Aero stepped off, the music cut off and the lights were turned mostly on. Suddenly, the lights began to dim, and the start of a song began to play. As the beat began to rise, the curtain was pulled away to reveal deadmau5 with his new mau5head and the new stage set-up The Expert Griefing Machine. The stage itself was a sight to behold, the Expert Griefing Machine is made-up of the main cube, similar to the stage that deadmau5 has used before, with extra smaller stacks of cubes to the right and left, on the ground and suspended in the air. Throughout the show, the cubes, which were covered in screens, displayed psychedelic visuals, graphics from old school Super Nintendo platformers like Super Mario World, with a mau5 character running around the levels, as well as fractalized textures derived from Zimmerman's newest hobby Minecraft and even some faux-3D effects.

It must be noted that deadmau5 is NOT a DJ. Even the term producer seems ill-placed when describing him. The music alone would be enough to write a fantastic review of deadmau5's performance, but with deadmau5 it's not just about the music, it is about the experience. The show is a multi-sensation experience combining the auditory, visual and tactile stimuli to envelop the audience in deadmau5's world. The visuals displayed on the Expert Griefing Machine are perfectly synchronized to match the vibe of the music being produced on the fly by the mau5man, all while the bass bombards your body to create an all-encompassing synesthetic's dream. I'm sure if the technology existed to control the smells and tastes that the audience were experiencing, deadmau5 would be the first to include them into his show.

The best part about Joel Zimmerman is that he isn't just a DJ. He isn't just a producer. He isn't just a nerdy kid who likes techno music and videogames. He is a guy who is doing what he truly loves to do who happened to get lucky enough to do it for a living. And this truly shows in his performance. Every aspect of the 2+ hour performance was designed with the same care as the rest. The night of deadmau5's concert will be a night I remember for my entire life.

The crowd in the Palladium was the most diverse crowd I have ever seen at a electronic music event. There were a decent spattering of 16 years being annoying as ever, though what can you expect. I witnessed one girl, who looked like she was 14, throw a water bottle at the stage, nearly hitting deadmau5 in his mau5head, and then giggling about it. After receiving numerous angry glares from people around her, she quickly fled. The most amazing part of the crowd though was the number of over 40 year olds dancing along in the crowds with everyone else. Deadmau5 has managed to traverse genre and age barriers to reach everyone. I know some people don't appreciate how EDM has become so mainstream but after seeing deadmau5, I know that these genres are here to stay.

After you're done here, go check out our calendar to find where deadmau5 is performing near you.

On a different note, have you guys seen deadmau5's newest tattoo? It's insane.

Weekly Beats - August 2012 - Week 2

Wednesday, 15 August 2012
Published in Top Tracks

Here are this week's top tracks!  Click here for last week's 'Weekly Beats'.

We began the week with Seven Lions' emotional dubstep remix of Above & Beyond's melodic single 'On My Way to Heaven'.

Next was another jam remixed by Nari & Milani.  Similar to their hit 'Atom', this remix of Topher Jones' 'Brohammer' is quite the track.

Basto caught our attention with a smashing new song entitled 'Bonny'.  The melody reminds me of a more complex rendition of eurodance melodies with a hint of 'video game soundtrack' sound in there.  Really liking this transformation the classic artist is making.

Another banger, 'Triangle' by Magnus & Timon reminds me of a mixture between Congorock and Zedd.  Check out this aptly named track below!

Next was a fresh remix of Loleatta Holloway's 'Love Sensation'.  The first time I heard a bootleg of this classic was when Chase & Status did it, but Starkillers & Dmitry KO's version is just as good albeit very different.  Housey and energetic!

Another 'Spectrum' remix you say!?  Just listen to this upbeat Jump Up DnB rework by DC Breaks and all your doubts will melt away.

Deniz Koyu's career is just getting hotter and hotter!  Seeing him a couple months ago before Pleasurekraft was amazing, and this preview of 'Follow You' is one of the most uplifting, party-friendly tracks I've heard this summer!  Check it out!

Next up is a stunning Dash Berlin remix of Coldplay's 'Clocks'.  I think that says it all.

Some very cool sounds coming out of Jaytech's own minimix of his second album entitled 'Multiverse'.  Being the nerd that I am, I love the name.  Looking forward to listening more to this feel-good release!

Kryder and Tom Staar have created a very exciting tech-housey remix of Afrojack/Shermanology's hit 'Can't Stop Me'.  And even if you didn't like the original, this version has some great editing that truly transforms the track.

The new music I'm most excited about this week is Haezer's teaser of his upcoming album 'The Wrong Kid Died EP'!  Filled with unbelievable production and very original sounds, I can't wait to check this out when it's officially released!

Hope everyone had a great week!

A-trak has dropped two bombs today! Earlier, he released an article on the art of "Button Pushing" and how too many DJ's are resorting to this method of performance. Albeit, he does make some reservations about how it is acceptable for the good of the show and increased production value.

But let's get back to the music. While this track is by no means one of his best creations, it still is good. A handy addition to any house DJ's set, A-Trak is back in the house with another remix of Zedd's Spectrum. Enjoy

Zedd - Spectrum (DC Breaks Refix)

Thursday, 09 August 2012
Published in Drum & Bass

We've all been extremely overwhelmed with Spectrum remixes; from dubstep to trance to electro house it feels like almost everything possible has been done to remix this track.  So when DC Breaks dropped this little bomb, I had my doubts.  Upon clicking play, those doubts vanished as my head started bobbing to the incredibly catchy drum n bass beat.  DC Breaks injects a new found ferocity into their remix of "Spectrum" unlike any of the other remixes on the official EP pack.

You can listen to the track below:
