Interview: Hook N Sling @ Lure (MEP Exclusive)

In a chaotic, frenetic and seemingly whirlwind like American dance music scene, it’s refreshing to see producers like Australia’s own Hook N Sling command the decks with poise, prowess, and an unfiltered level of experience which he exudes on a nightly basis.  Hollywood clubs are constantly pumping forth cult-like “top 40” EDM tracks (i.e. Levels, We Found Love) and while I may enjoy these tracks, partying to them week in and week out has become a bit tiresome.  I have been a Hook N Sling fan for a few years now, and had always been captivated the inventive DJ and production skills he brought to the table.  His ability to write tracks across the EDM spectrum has always enticed me, as well as the signature tinge of euphoria and easability to listen to present in most Hook N Sling productions. When I was granted the opportunity to interview and watch Hook N Sling at Lure in Hollywood, I knew this would be a learning experience I couldn’t turn down.

You can see a review on his stellar set at Lure that evening after the jump.

Hook N Sling jumped on the decks at around 12:30 am, and took no time to get the party started.  The dance floor at Lure was packed as the familiar melody of Arty & Matisse & Sadko’s “Trio” began trickling out of the speakers.  As bottles began popping and dancers got into position, the Nervo sisters vocal line from “Reason” was layered onto “Trio”, immediately igniting the club into a sing a long frenzy. Lure has a  notoriously difficult dance floor, yet Hook N Sling managed to get the party underway quite early with his series of stellar bootlegs and surprises that he had prepared for the night.

Hook N Sling weaved in and out of his track “Diamonds in the Sky” and Sandro Silva & Quintino’s “Epic” effortlessly.  He catered to his audience, and dropped many crowd favorites like “Niggas in Paris” over Benny Benassi’s “Satisfaction”.   He played his newest remix of Michael Calfan’s “Mozaik” as well as the original mix of his most recent successful collaboration with fellow aussies the Nervo Sisters, “Reason”

My favorite bootleg of the evening was when Hook N Sling took us on a high speed chase through Axwell’s recut club version of Michael Calfan’s “Resurrection”, kicking things into high gear with Miami Horror’s “Sometimes” vocal and pinning us to the edge of our seats by pulling a sharp unexpected but successful turn into the classic vocals of Miike Snow’s “Silvia” for the second drop.

Hook N Sling has been a respected dance music veteran for years now, slowly accumulating a series of awards and accolades including an ARIA Music Awards nomination in 2007,a DMC Buzz Chart #1 and several Pete Tong plays over the years.  He has remixed a plethora of DJ’s across a multitude of genres including Wolfgang Gartner, Flo Rida, Miike Snow, Miami Horror and Calvin Harris to name a few.  His most recent top 10 Beatport collaboration with the Nervo Sisters has finally catapulted him into the American dance music spotlight, shedding some light on the longtime Aussie producer who’s got a back catalogue of gold and spins a mean DJ set.  I would highly recommend getting out and seeing this stellar producer at a venue near you; here’s to seeing more of Hook N Sling around the US of A!
